Postcard – East side of Battle Rock – Pre-Gable short dock – No jetty – Minimal driftwood – c1930. ‘Huge Rock’ in the background was used to anchor cables for the Fife Wilson Company’s lumber loading tower.  Cables attached to those anchors were used to sling lumber from Fort Point down to the deck of small coastal freighters such as the SS Della.

Shown here with the boat “Grass Belly” are, left to right, Mr, Bunch, local school teacher, Bernal Forty, Delmar Wright, Charles Gene Strain in the back row; in the front row are, Lowell Johnston, Carl White and Bob Forty. Lucille Douglas provided the names. Note the sparse forest in the background, likely the result of a forest fire.

Local lore has it that during the 20’s-30’s the Hubbard Creek Drainage was being logged and whomever was doing it attached a temporary dock to ‘Lumber Rock’ for loading purposes.  They built a section of narrow gauge rail line that connected to the dock.  Mike Mijs (a property owner along Hubbard Creek) allowed me to photograph a piece of the old track he had found on his property. The warehouse was likely built to protect the hardwood lumber Fife Wilson Company was shipping to their furniture factory in Portland. A wooden is visible in the distance and Graveyard Point is intact. There appears to be a small derelict bathhouse appears at the right edge of the photo. Minimal driftwood.
