Beecher Jess was Port Orford’s leading blacksmith at the time. Rudolph Leutweyler , later bought the shop. Brother Paul joined him in 1923. Building housed restaurants including Orford’s Cafe. Currently Hawthorne Art Gallery.

Nielsen/Fromm/Marsh Building, 3315-05DA Block 47 Taxlot 4601, 246 6th Street, Blt 1903/04,Nels Nielsen Two Story, commercial. Bought the vacant lot Dec.1902 from William Tichenor’s daughter Sarah Ellen Tichenor McGraw. Held the Port Orford Post Office in early years. Had a dance/exhibition hall and basket ball court upstairs. The Pugh’s rented a drug store space ca. 1927. Masterson identifies it as the Nielsen Building in 1910 and 1914 photos. John Fromm owned building in the 20’s, sold to John Marsh in 1934. Building extended in the rear mid 1920’s, Roof changed from hip to gable, mid 1930’s. The Marsh’s did a major façade redo in the late 1970’s. Nielsen/Bernal Forty House/Cook Gallery, 3315-05DA Block 54, Taxlot 1900 705 Oregon Street, blt. 1890-1895. Originally two story. Built by P.J. Lindberg for the Nels and Mary Nielsen. Bob and Myrtle Forty, along with Myrtle’s McGill family, lived in the house while they built the Forty House next door. In 1930 T. J. Fromm bought the place and later sold to Bernal Forty abt. 1940. The house was used as a rental in its early years. There have been two fires, both burnt the second story. First fire was in early 30’s. Originally located at 7th and Jefferson. Originally served as Woodmen Hall till 1929, “The Battle Rock Women of Woodcraft” continued to hold meetings and events till 1934. Madge “Magnolia” White and sister, Violet, bought building. Madge ran dance hall called Magnolia’s Garden. Bought by Agnes Leutwyler in the 1940’s. Moved to present location in the 1950’s. She and her son operated a skate rink/dance hall (Rainbow Gardens) in the buildings original place before and after it was moved. Later used as a supermarket. Ali’s auto repair shop, local theater group, Ed’s Underground Pub and Pizza.

Frank McIntyre bought house and land to the north in 1925. He starts an auto court, called Garrison Lake Auto Camp. Served as a hospital 1935-1937. Nick Marsh and family bought house in 1937 from Murta McIntyre, sister of Frank. Marsh closed in the front porch. Jeff MacFarlane found an interior board dated 1911 while doing some repairs. Nielsen used the house as a rental initially, renting to watchmaker H. Neely. Oct. 1911, Mrs. Nielsen traded Beecher Jess the house. Jess, in 1917, sells to John Fromm Jr. Beecher Jess was a blacksmith, moved to Port Orford after 1900. He had a shop down town and a saw mill on Poverty Ridge between Sixes and Elk River. The Fromms were an early Port Orford family, noted for ranches on Brushes Creek and Elk River. Hank Allard was a local commercial fisherman. Situated on the SW corner of old Fort Orford. Mayor Gable built the Port Orford Port Authority administration building on land owned by the Port Orford Dock and Terminal Corporation. In 1948,
Mr. And Mrs. Preston Rohner bought the property and opened the Castaway By the Sea Lodge and Restaurant. The Rohners sold to Jack Feeney. Feeney leased to Elgin Wiles. Wiles set the place on fire in 1958. Only the existing cabin was saved. The rest of the lodge burnt to the ground.
