Orville Ewing and his Touring Menagerie from Pritchett, Colorado to San Francisco.”The Old West Still Lives”. Unknown Building on the corner of Oregon and 5th. Battle Rock Junior High was built as a combined Junior/Senior High School c1927. Note: Hwy 101 was graveled. Bernal Forty House was built for the Nielsens by PJ Lindberg c1890. Originally there were 3 bedrooms upstairs. It has been extensively remodeled over the years following a fire in the 1920’s and later fire in the early 60’s. It is currently the Rick Cook Studio. Other than loss of second story, the outside remains original. Interior has had renovations but retains much of the original character. The Bob Forty House was built by Douglas McGill and Bob Forty in 1915. Norms food center was John Quick’s store till Norm took it over in the late 1940’s into the 50’s. Orville Ewing (Standing next to the ox): “I was an artist until 1937 when too much paint got into my system and I was forced to give up this work. In 1938 I started out for the San Francisco World’s Fair, arriving in 1939. Soon after my arrival I shipped my outfit back to Colorado and then started for the New York World’s Fair. I arrived in New York in 1940 and was back again in Colorado in 1941. The touring menagerie has traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from Canada to the Mexican border. One of the most interesting features of the menagerie is the six year old ox who weighs 1500 pounds. The Menagerie makes about ten miles a day. I was born in Indiana and now in 1943 am fifty-five years old. I have spent most of my time in the West since 1916.”

Oldsmobiles can be tricky to identify unless you have an up-close look at them. There is a lot of overlap in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. Some only have body trim differences to go by. Olds and Cadillac brought out body shell changes in 1948 while the rest of the GM lines had to wait another year. Bill Forbes)
