The Hughes House and Ranch is a well-known destination on the Southern Oregon Coast nestled in Cape Blanco State Park at the mouth of the Sixes River. Each year the Port Orford Community comes together to decorate the pioneer home to a theme. In 2023, the theme was appropriately entitled “The Spirit of Community Christmas”.
Pioneers Patrick and Jane Hughes operated a successful dairy ranch for more than thirty years at this site. The couple was able to pay pioneer builder Pehr Johan Lindberg to design and build the comfortable, two-story home in 1898. The protected location was no doubt considered by Patrick Hughes and P.J. Lindberg when they planned the design of the home. Unfortunately, Patrick Hughes died in a horseriding accident just a few years after the construction was completed. Jane Hughes remained at the home with her family until her death in 1923. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a popular attraction for visitors to the Southern Oregon Coast. Learn more at the Cape Blanco Heritage Society website.
The map below was hand-drawn by Patrick Masterson (a descendant of the Hughes family) on October 28 1980 while creating what would eventually become the “Port Orford Cultural Resource Catalog.” It has been re-labeled by Rebecca Malamud-Evans for the Port Orford Historical Photos Project for the purpose of creating a historical walkthrough video of the home.
The following panoramic photos were taken by Rebecca Malamud-Evans to document the rooms of the historic Hughes House in 2021:
