Artist John Heida is no stranger to the Port Orford area, actively hiking the region and capturing its natural beauty for decades. He is well-known in the area for his free classes and mini-field trips where he shares his knowledge with anyone interested in learning more about the photographic arts. He only recently made the leap into digital when the technology could finally capture what he could see with his artistic eye.
He often retouches images for the Port Orford Historical Photos Archive providing an extraordinarily crisp view into the past. The following three photos were retouched by John Heida for the Port Orford Historical Photos Archive. They represent some of the earliest images in the Alan Mitchell Collection.
John and Alan have worked together for years on collecting and improving historical photos of the area. You can see many of these early finds in the Heida Community Project. He was also instrumental in these restorations of the Croxall Collection, including color photos archived and retouched from the Port Orford Visitors Center and these beautiful images scanned and retouched from glass negatives by Heida. We have a third collection recently restored and donated to Port Orford Historical Photos that we will be adding to the site soon. Stay tuned!

We love John Heida’s work! Be sure to check out the “Heida Community Project” which was a precursor to the Port Orford Historical Photos Project (and now is most fittingly a part of it): https://blog.portorfordhistoricalphotos.org/heida-community-project/
